you use your pokemon from either diamond/pearl/platinum/ HeartGold/SoulSilver and use the Nintendo WiFi Connection to battle :£ injoy and welcome...

ok. one more question. even though i have a wireless router, i still need a ds wi-fi adapter, right?

if your DS can connect to the router

1) pokemon main screen
2) wifi settings
3) follow steps from there

you dont need a wifi adapter...but if it doesn't then you do..hope i helped!
